Hiatal hernia’s can occur in all types of individuals. We at hernia surgery Santa Clarita know how important it is to be knowledgeable about your symptoms. Dr. Rafael Lemus-Rangel wants you to know the precautions you can take if you have a hiatal hernia.
What is Hiatal Hernia?
Hiatal Hernia’s can be an uncomfortable problem to manage. Hiatal Hernia’s can arise when your stomach moves upwards into your chest. When this occurs, it can force regurgitated stomach acid to move into your esophagus. As this process happens, your body begins to react with heartburn, chest pains, or even GERD. Hiatal hernias have many symptoms, however, there are a number of things patients can do to lessen the intensity of those symptoms.
Eating Leaner Meats
Those diagnosed with hiatal hernia should try and avoid fattier meats. Red meats and even cold cuts, can be considered fatty, and should be substituted for meats that are lower in fat. For a leaner protein replacement, fish, turkey, and chicken are a better option. It’s always best to remove anything spicy from your diet, as well. Fried foods can exasperate the condition, so baking is the best way to cook your meats.
Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
Vegetables are going to be beneficial for you with, or without a hiatal hernia. The darker the greens, the better, that includes broccoli and spinach. Some other great options are sweet potatoes, squash, and red bell peppers. With hiatal hernias, you want to avoid fruits that may have too much acidity. Citric fruits like tomatoes and grapefruits should be avoided, as well as oranges. Other fruits like cherries, raspberries, and cantaloupe are great fruit options.
Oils, Dairy and Grains
Processed foods are never a good choice for anyone, and that’s especially true for hiatal hernia patients. Foods that have refined sugar or starches should be removed from the diet. We don’t want to remove all fats from the diet, but add in healthier fats like olive or safflower oil. Prepackaged cookies, cakes, and even crackers should be avoided. Whole grains are beneficial to keeping symptoms away. A few good whole grain choices include brown rice, quinoa, and rye breads. All dairy products consumed should be low in fat, or made by a nondairy alternative.
Drink Your Water
In most cases water is best, and especially in the case of hiatal hernias. Unfortunately, there are not very many beverages to choose from that can lessen the symptoms. Avoiding coffee and juice will be most beneficial, as well as alcohol and soda. Teas can be another beverage option, but peppermint tea has been known to cause heartburn.
Remember to always contact a physician with any symptoms that occur with hiatal hernias. If you decide to change your diet, consult a doctor before proceeding. Do not take any medication without first consulting your doctor.
